For our upcoming March Madness trip we were looking for some evening
entertainment that didn't involve midget oil wrestling (for a
change.) I bought a nosebleed seat to see "LOVE" Thursday night since
my buddy doesn't come in until Friday and he didn't want to see it.
Then we just picked up tickets to see Don Rickles at the Orleans
Sunday night.

Has anyone seen him lately? We figured it was our last chance to see
a link to the Rat Pack and the golden days of Vegas entertainment. My
fear is that he has one foot in the grave and it will be depressing.
My hope is that he is still lucid enough to insult my bald dome while
I sit in the second row. I would like nothing more than to take an
insult from this comedy pioneer.

Anyway, if anyone has seen him in the last couple of years I would be
interested in your comments.

We're still searching for entertainment options for Friday and
Saturday. Perhaps the English Beat at HOB or the Wailers at GVR
Friday (gotta score some hippie lettuce for that one) or the XFA fight
at the Hilton on Saturday.

Well, ever time he appears on Letterman, he seems sharp as a tack.

I am sure he has slowed a little, but I have not heard anything say anything
bad about him.

Unfortunately, Rich Little has been reported to be terrible! Most of his
impressions are tool old for the newer audiences to appreciate (perhaps
George Burns and Johnny Carson still work) but overall, I do not hear anyone
talk highly of performances.

Personally, as much as I would idolize Rickles, I would see Gordy Brown
instead. If you want true insult humor where you will most definitely get
picked on, go see Vinny Favorito. Tell him you are a friend of Big Mikey
and he will most certainly toss you out of the audience. We have gone at it
three times now and he has given me two tee shirts and one cd.

Jerry Lewis is the Abbot of the NY Friars and Vinny is his sort of assistant
when the roast someone in NY.

Never said Gordy was Don Rickles. Winny tries to insult like Rickles. I
just think for the money, I would rather pass on Rickles and see Gordy.

Sort of like I would rather see Kevin James than Steve Wyrick.

Saw him at the Stardust in 2006. He still had it then. He even sang a
few songs and wasn't half-bad. He usually has a girl singer as his
opening act, otherwise the live band that plays him onstage doesn't
have much to do. When I was there it was Larry King's wife; she could
carry a tune but was otherwise unremarkable.

Also saw Rickles on Craig Ferguson's show last week and he seemed fine.
He was plugging the documentary about him, "Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles
Project," which has been playing on HBO (numerous showings scheduled in
March). The docu includes some clips from his Stardust show.

SM,

I think Burt would disagree, but we saw Rickles on the same night a few
years back and I wouldn't recommend seeing him. I was more than happy to
allow Mr. Rickles a little bit of lee-way since I've always been a big fan,
but when he repeated the same joke twice during the evening it was pretty
much a cherry on top of an evening full of winces. It didn't help matters
that Larry King's wife opened the show. Yikes!

If I remember Burt's TR correctly, his buddy wore a pretty obnoxious sweater
while sitting in the front row in the hopes of him commenting on it, but to
no avail.

I just bought Rickles tickets tonight for the March 20th show. I used a 2
for 1 showroom coupon from a funbook I had when my office got rooms for some
out of town guests over a year and a half ago. I was surprised they took it.
Pretty good seats for 35.00 a peice.

I've actually met Don Rickles a couple of times in real life. Nice
guy. Always joking around. The guy you see on TV is EXACTLY the same
guy you talk to in real life. Just a funny guy.

Once he's gone , he's gone. By all means see him. The last of Las
Vegas legends.

Many times I kick myself for not seeing Liberace, Sinatra, and some
others when I had the chance. Figured I'd see them another time. Well
maybe in the far beyond.

I saw him at the Stardust 2 years ago for the same reasons you
articulate, Singlemalt. He was sharp enough, a little blue by middle
America standards and energetic --- but --- a big but ---the show hasn't
changed since the early 60s and isn't at all fresh (think Japanese
soldier jokes). He's much more witty and topical on current late night
talk shows than during his own show. His opening act was a 60+ year-old
female singer who's name escapes me. Nice enough voice -- I'm sure she
was a looker when Caddys had tailfins.

I'm not trying to be harsh, I like the guy. But see him for nostalga's
sake while you can and don't expect anything cutting edge, or relevant
to the 90s,the 80s, maybe even the 70s.

Just saw him in October in what was his last show at the Nugget. His
act hasn't changed much over the years. In fact after watching Mr
Warmth, the scenes of his act were exactly the same and they were tape
at least a year or two earlier. However, if you don't see him when
you have a chance, you may regret it later when the possibility is
gone. A few years ago someone gave us tickets to see John Denver in
Baltimore. The day came and we were too tired to go. He was dead
within a week.
