Does Vegas get many young backpackers?! I'm in my early 20s and will be
backpacking across the US next summer from New York to LA.
I want to stop in Vegas for a few days, but I'm on quite a tight budget
(certainly as I want to save a little money to play in the casinos!).
Has anyone been backpacking through Las Vegas? Are there any backpacker
haunts? Cheap places to stay etc.
Thanks for any help!
JK

Does your trip include hitchhiking? If so I would suggest a bus ticket
into and out of Las Vegas. I wouldn't want to be trying to thumb it
out of here during the summer.
Check out Cheapo Vegas. http://www.cheapovegas.com
Get a room downtown to be within walking distance of the widest array
of cheap food and stuff to do. You're obviously an adventurer so you
probably won't be scared off too much by the relative seediness of the
outlying areas. Use the buses and monorail to see the Strip but expect
to be fleeced price-wise for everything outside of downtown.

No back packing experience but, the cheapest place to stay is downtown. The
Strip however (Las Vegas Blvd. Stratosphere hotel and south) is where all
the major Hotels are located.
There are a few just off the strip hotels like Gold Coast and the Orleans
that should have reasonable hotel rates in the summer ( they both offer free
shuttles to the strip) Gold Coast is a walk-able distance to strip though it
would not be a comfortable walk on a hot summer day.
Plan your trip with a Vegas stay during the weekdays when hotel rates are
cheaper. Hotel rates should also be cheaper in the summer unless there is a
special event happening.
Be warned, it is very hot during the summer and will get into the 100+
degrees during the day. You'll definitely want to leave you pack somewhere.

you should be able to stay in a room with ac for under 35 bucks, downtown,
The difference with vegas heat is its a dry heat, little humidity, its in
a desert so its not uncommon for the temp to reach 110 or more, can not go
bare foot or you will burn your feet.

Thanks for the tips. Lots of useful info there!
I'm sure it'll be pretty hot - I don't know how much difference in
temperature there will be, but I'll try to arrange my visit towards the
end of the summer if possible. I have experienced the heat before though
in Central America last year, so I kind of know what to expect in that
respect. And unlike there, I bet everywhere indoors has icey air-con!

I have an image of what Vegas will be like in my head, but I'm sure it
will blow me away when I get there!

Wait a few months before booking, but you will be able to get a hotel
for under $20 during the summer on a weekday. If you want to be close
to the action, I would try Sahara. It is on the far North End of the
strip and, although it is showing its age, you can get $19 or $29 per
night rates during the summer weekdays.
