For years, the El Cortez had 2 roulette tables. When they expanded to
table games a year or two ago, they added 2 more, for a total of 4.
All of the them are of the 25 cent chip variety, $1 min. bet. This is
the only casino I can think of that has actually added the number of
roulette tables to their casino. I know roulette has the best house
advantage of any casino table game, but does the El Cortez really rake
it in on roulette to justify 4 tables? They must, and when I was in
town earlier this month they had all 4 tables going. I wonder how
much they make on roulette every week/month?

Yeah, that's probably why they added two more tables....and they still
fill up, too.
I suppose with a min. that low, they probably get lots of players who
figure, "Why not! It's just $5 for a stack of chips." For $20 you
can get 4 stacks of chips, then you can feel like a big shot, although
not as big a shot as you would have been at the dime roulette game
they used to have at the Klondike or the Western (does the Western
still have dime roulette?)

Seems like most of your posts are about this place. In 30 years, it's one
of the few I've never hit. Guess I'll have to go out of my way to pay them a
vivst next trip.... do I mention your name? LOL

Guilty as charged. However, I wondered this about ANY casino that has
added two more quarter roulette games in the last year or two. Many
casinos don't even have four roulette tables, let alone four 25 cent
tables. They must be raking in money on those games; why else would
they add more to the casino?
If you really like to gamble, the El Cortez is the place, IMHO. They
were voted last year in the LVRJ as having the best blackjack in Las
Vegas. ALL their games pay 3:2.

My local casino has six 50 cent roulette tables. During the day they
usually have three open and on weeknights and most of the weekend they have
all six open.
Its not the house edge as to why they have so many tables open but mainly
because these tables are often full and the way the majority of players play
the game has a very high risk of ruin.
I would say the majority of players that go up to a roulette table (here or
in Las Vegas) buy in and get a big stack of chips... bet them all and cover
the majority of numbers on the table... spin of the wheel... and if they win
they usually come out 10-20% ahead of what they bet... and then proceed to
repeat the process where they bet all their chips on the next spin...
And thats usually how it goes until either they win a massive stack of chips
or they lose it all in one spin... in which the latter is more often the
case.
I would also say too that it seems like over the last couple of years
roulette is making a bit of a mini comeback thanks in part to games like
Rapid Roulette and Video Roulette. |

I've tried Rapid Roulette; didn't like it. I prefer sitting at a real
table. I'd rather play video roulette than Rapid Roulette.

Rapid Roulette, they use an actual croupier & wheel, but you sit at a
video terminal & have 30 seconds or so to place your bets, min bet is .
50 increments. Video Roulette is like a slot of VP machine, but you
set your own pace & you can bet in 5 cent increments. Much better
than Rapid Roulette, but it's not as good as the real deal, IMHO.

Correction: Rapid Roulette is in 50 cent increments, and I think you
have to buy in for a min. amt ($10, $20?), where as a video roulette,
you can play for $1 if you want.

Rapid Roulette has a wheel and (usually) 2 dealers working the pit. Players
buy in through the dealers and place their bets on a betting terminal. The
dealer handles the spins and runs a game about every 30-45 seconds. When
you cash out you are paid in casino chips.
Video Roulette is more like a slot machine. It has a graphical
representation of a wheel and you are playing alone, meaning you can play as
many spins as you want (like slots or video poker, all about how fast you
hit the button).
Rapid Roulette is generally played with 50 cent chips (used to be some
downtown casinos that had 25 cent chips, but not sure there are still any).
With Video Roulette most places on the strip are 25 cent chips, some are
minimum $1 chips and there might be even lower denomination chips out
there.... but you get a choice of value of chips from whatever the minimum
is, up to usually $5 chips.
Rapid Roulette is always played on a standard American roulette wheel with
two zeros. In almost every case Video Roulette has only a single zero on
the wheel (I don't know of any places in Las Vegas with a double zero wheel,
but I presume they exist).
Because it has only a single zero wheel doesn't mean Video Roulette has a
lower house edge - at some casinos they have changed the paybacks on the
bets to accomodate the changed house edge... IE: the "split bet" might
normally pay 17:1 but on some Video Roulette machines it pays only 16:1. Or
the single number bet might normally pay 35:1 on a roulette table (or Rapid
Roulette table) whereas on some Video Roulette machines it can be set to pay
32:1. This can also change on the value of your chips. A 25 cent machine
might pay back only 32:1 on a single number bet, but pay the full 35:1 if
you are using $1+ chips.
Rapid Roulette always has a minimum bet, at most casinos in Las Vegas this
is $2.50. On almost all Video Roulette machines you can bet as little as 1
chip.
On some Video Roulette machines they restrict what chips you can use/bets
you can make. On a roulette table you could put 1 chip on 10, up to
whatever number of chips you want: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, ... 10, 11, 12, ...
20, ... 30, 31, 32, ... etc. The same applies to Rapid Roulette. On some
Video Roulette machines they let you make bets with only 1, 2, 5 or 10
chips. On those machines you can't bet any other number of chips on any
single bet: IE: you can't put 3 chips on #10 because you can place only 1
chip or 2 chips... you can't stack the chips. If you put 1 chip on #10 and
then click #10 again with 1 chip nothing happens (you already have a 1 chip
there) if you click on the "2" chips to bet and click on #10 it replaces
your single chip bet with a 2 chip bet... doesn't add the 2 chips to the 1
chip already there.
This is only for SOME of the Video Roulette machines. Some of the machines
do let you stack chips. |

The thing I hated about Rapid Roulette is being at a video terminal,
having a time limit, and min. bet of $2.50 w/50 cent chips. If I'm
going to be at a machine, I dictate how fast I play as well as how much
or little I feel like betting. That's why the video roulette machines
are much better than Rapid Roulette. The VR machines downtown let you
bet a nickel at a time if you want. Please, Rapid Roulette had the feel
of a lame game show that's about to get the ax.

Come on-you spend time there. You can see the people come in 24
hours, throw down a few bills and spead their quarter chips till that
5.26% vig grinds them down. Some interesting charcters at those ElCo
roullete wheels past midnight1
