Hi all

I am posting this message, as I am planning a trip to Las Vegas in
October and have a few questions.

First can anyone tell me what the difference is between a Premier,
Regency, and World Tower room at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino? Do
any of these provide a better view? Every time I stay there I hope to
get a view of the strip, but never do. They always tell that there are
no strip view rooms available or that I need to upgrade to a suite. I
just wish they would list the rooms on their web site, as being with a
strip view or not.

Also starting looking at rental car rates. In the past I rented from
Payless, as they seemed to have the best rates. This go-around I
noticed that are couple of new rental companies (Fox and New Frontier)
that seem to have better rates than Payless, as does some majors like
Thrifty and Dollar. Anyone have any experience with either of these new
companies?

Thanks in advance for reading my post and answering my questions.

Michael

Can't give any good advice about the Strat. Ron claims to have stayed
there - maybe he can help.

As for renting a car - I advise always sticking to major players like
Thrifty and Dollar. Both have don't wait in line programs that work
great, and usually provide excellent service. Even if you can save a
couple of dollars with a newcomer, it's just not worth the risk.

Thanks for the advice. Now I will just need to remember to bring my
driver license with me. I forgot it on a recent to trip to Fort
Lauderdale. Luckily my dad brought his and we were able to put his name
on the reservation. At least I brought my passport, so I was able to
get through security.

I stayed at Fitzageralds on Fremont. Low price, reasonable room,
ordinary view from the window - but walk outside and you were in the
"Fremont Street Experience" light show at night.

Everything in walking distance. I'd never stay out at the strip. JMO

I agree about using the majors. I would not use Alamo or National
(which Alamo owns). They always seem to have long lines especially on
returns.

Dollar is very good if you use their Fastlane membership. With Fastlane
you go right to lot and pick out the car you want. Driver drops you at
your rental category. You show card and credit card at exit gate. They
also have an over 50 program but I haven't checked it out. We've used
Fastlane twice this past 6 months and it is FAST and their rates are
always among the lowest of the majors.

AVIS is also good especially if you have AARP. They also have a quick
pickup program but I haven't joined that yet. They have always been
very quick at the airport counter and it is right near baggage.

Hertz is also good especially using AAA. And also quick at airport
counter.

Both Avis and Hertz are usually just a little more than dollar and
sometimes lower if you have one of the discount codes.

Does anyone know how to get a car rental at the airport without paying
all the extra fees like Customer Facility charge (3.00) per day,
Concession Recovery Fee 10%.

Michael,

Several years ago, I stayed there and purchased the rooms
through one of the internet companies, these rooms are
not the best (in rooms) the hotels offer.

They told me the only thing available were mountain views.
The room smelled so bad I complained to housekeeping doing
the room next door. She suggested me going to Walgreens and
buying some air freshner.

A trip to the consignor (or whatever you call them) repeating
the Walgreens suggestion resulted in a players room on the 22nd
floor overlooking the strip. This room was big as and nice as
any room I've had at the "Rio".

Instead of the $20 trick, try the "Walgreen Trick".

Vegas is a great places to use AARP discounts. You can use them on air
travel to vegas, rental cars, hotels, etc. Both AAA and AARP discounts
are very handy in Las Vegas.

If you crossed Las Vegas Blvd you would have seen the other Fremont Street
experience. It is looks rather rough, even with some serious police
activity.

Michael,
IMHO, I stay with the more well recognised auto rental places when I
travel. Enterprise, Alamo, Dollar, Hertz to name a few. A car is a car,
but a more professional organisation will treat you better, they have better
trained staff and there is, usually, a well oiled problem resolution
process for legit issues.
Take a moment and write down the number you called, the person you spoke
to, the reservation confirmation number and make a permanent record of it in
the unlikely but statistically possible event of a missunderstanding /
misscommunication.
If you have a complaint do not drive the car, get it resolved before you
leave the lot. Who knows what that "whack whack dong ding badabing" sound
is you keep hearing. Get another car and let the place fix their car, and
you will not have to deal with a potential problem on the road.
Best of luck here in Vegas!! Welcome to my hometown! Smile

You probably can't. Don't some of the hotels offer shuttles to and from the
airport? If so you could rent a car elsewhere?

If you are renting at the airport, you've got to pay the airport fees and
taxes. The best bet is to take a shuttle to your hotel and then take a bus
to any of the local agencies in North Las Vegas. Last July, there was a
$24 per rental "facilities" fee at LAS, an 8.75% sales tax, and two other
service taxes at 10% each, for a total of $24 + 28.75% added to your
rental. On Rancho Road in North Las Vegas, there was no per rental
"facilities" fee, sales tax was 8.5%, and the two service taxes were 6% and
4%, for a total off 18.5% added to your rental.

You should be aware that the extra charges will be applied to all your
bill. Therefore, if you drop your car off at another location, the one
way drop off charge will also be affected. This happened to me once
renting at Chicago and having an airport 30% surcharge, which also
applied to the one way rental charge ($300), resulting in an additional
$90 that I didn't expect to pay when I dropped the car off in
Cleveland. Of course, Hertz never mentioned these charges when asked
for a quote. If I knew this, I could have done the trip in reverse.

The "rent from" location charges are always the ones that apply regardless
of the "return to" location.

If you use their online reservations, Hertz will give you a breakdown of
the estimated charges which shows all fees and taxes. That's how I found
out about renting in North Las Vegas vs. LAS.
