Sunday started out at the Palms with their new promotion
of guessing how much money in a jar which was not
actually a jar. Then another swipe of the players card
and the wife won a two disc cd movie of American
Gangster, I won 400 points. We had eaten Saturdays dinner
at the Palms Bistro Buffet on a 2/1 promotion received
in the mail. Also the total win this month for the wife
on the free Megabucks pulls is $105. The wife started
today with a $2 win on the duces wild machine.

Then off to the ElCo and $10 free slot play from
the POV. The wife won $13 on the duces wild
and cashed out. The players club keeps good
records of the free play and noted that I had used
up the American Casino Guide & POV for the
year (one each for the year). You have to sign a
voucher to get the free play.

The ElCo has removed several banks of machines
on the Fremont side of the sports book and replaced
them with six brand new blackjack tables which were
not in use.

Next it was off to the Western were we quickly
won $30 and left to go to the Rio Buffet.

The dinner hour starts at 3:30 and we arrive at 4pm.
There is a seperate line for coupons and with the
2/1 from the POV we were charged $25.85.

They also had three other lines where people
used an automated atm machine like devices,
insert cash or cards and it issues a dinner
receipt. Sort of like subway turnstyle lines.

Each line was about 10 deep but moved quickly.
This is the first time for us at the Rio Buffet, in
the past what I heard many times it has gone
downhill since it was Harrahized, so I have
nothing to really compare it too. Besides the
automated system to pay and a buffet that
actually has restrooms in the buffet area, the
only other observation was the serving stations
seemed longer than the Fremont Experience.
About twice as long as the Main Street Station
Buffet or even longer.

I had the prime rib & pork roast which was
quite good. My sweetheart had the anemic
snow crab legs & sushi which she did not
care for amongst other things. Since she
is Asian & when I met her a cook at an Asian
restaurant here in town. One time at the Elco
Chinese Buffet she went into the kitchen to
give the chief some cooking advice.

Needless to say my dinners at home are
wonderful. When we go grocery shopping
at the Seafood Market, Diho or 99 Ranch
market, I don't know what most of the stuff
she is buying, especially the vegetables.

At almost every buffet she ends up with
many plates of food, just taking a bite
out of this or that and saying yuk or good,
judging the other cooks. When we left
about 5 pm, there was no line. For $25.85
for two people it is ok, but if your going to
pay full price, Red Rock or GVR is a better
value.

We spent some time in the casino where she
turned $5 into $7.50. We watch some blackjack
play and one player made a green chip bet for
the dealer and they both lost. He did this a
second time and they both lost again. Then a
third time when he hit a stiff to an 18 against the
dealers face card. She flipped over her down
card, a seven, screemed and jumped
about ten feet in the air. I was tempted to
ask the player if he was Tom from Ct.

When this was over we were just in time
for the Masquerade Show in The Sky. I
was just as impressed as the first time
I've seen it. One of the better free attractions
in Vegas. The POV has 2/1 Masquerade
ride ticket which I did several years ago and it
was fun, if you have the POV, do it

Why was the dealer surprised by her down card? With a face card
showing, aren't they supposed to peek at the down card immediately to
see if they have blackjack?

I think when they peek it only shows faces or aces, not other cards. Good
(but lengthy) article about this at

Walt, I've seen several different methods. The upper
margins on the down side of the cards are marked
and viewed through an optical device. Another is
a different type of device where a red or green LED
will light up, if its red the player is dead meat.

Also at Poker Palace they have a no peak rule.
The hand is played out, those who have busted,
their bets are collected. When the dealer reveals
the blackjack she collects the bets, if you have
doubled down, the double down portion is returned
to the player.

Okay, got it. I only play the occasional matchplay and I don't pay
much attention to what the dealer is doing. So if she is using a
scanner (thanks, George), she isn't physically eyeballing the down
card, therefore in your case she wouldn't have known she had a losing
hand.

I liked the RIO Buffet, but I agree with you. If you pay total price, GVR
and Red Rock are better.

I still think Rampart Buffet is slowing coming back to the days when it was
as good as the Regent.

Of the station casinos the Boulder Station still is the best. Palace
Station is the worst.

Of the Coast Casinos, Orleans and Suncoast are pretty equal with Gold Coast
not really far behind.

It has been a while on some of the strip buffets so I will let others give
me their thoughts. My girlfriend really does not like fancy foods so going
there really is a waste of money for us. My magician friend is taking me to
Sage Sushi on Wednesday and I will have a report on the Sushi as well as his
choices for good magic here in Las Vegas.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers, of which we get a
few here (no need to name names).

POV is a Vegas coupon book...

Matt,

It is probably the best book available but is really a value
if you are a local as you can use many coupons
throughout the year. Vacationers just do not have
enough time unless your out here several times a year.

But, there is an answer, used books bring almost the
full price on ebay, as The Las Vegas Advisor will sell
only two books per year per household, creating a
good resale market.

So buy your book with the intentions of reselling on
ebay, net cost may be zero for you.

Matt was being sarcastic; the "lva.com" link that the Shunned One gave
him didn't work.

Good point, though, about reselling the POV. It would also help to
have a car, even for just one day. There are quite a few matchplay
coupons including some for $10 and $25. He could do a coupon run and
visit some of the off-Strip properties, try a buffet, etc.

Again, Wort talks but flaps his lips for 20 minutes.

Trust Westie, Tom or I to give you the right information.

Westie covers the Strip EAST, and I cover the STRIP west.

Pops Berman was pretty good once, but he died.

Wort doesn't even live here. He just copies from us.
