Just when I thought flying to Vegas couldn't get any worse...

I used to fly United to LAS, but the flights land at the D gates and the
wait at the baggage claim is almost unbearable. Seems like it has been
taking 20 minutes or more AFTER I get to the baggage claim, which is
more like 30 minutes after I step off the plane. I guess the distance
of the D gates explains the delay, but it doesn't make it any less
unpleasant.

So I switched to US Airways, which lets you off at the A or B gates.
The wait for my baggage isn't so bad, but good grief... checking in is a
total nightmare. Two weeks ago at McCarran it took me almost 20 minutes
to get past the self-service check-in kiosks, which are supposed to
glide you through swiftly. US Airways (for reasons that I cannot even
begin to understand) set up a cluster of kiosks about 10 feet from the
counters, with no ropes to funnel the passengers into anything like an
orderly line. I saw five sprawling clumps of dazed passengers with
baggage. Only four agents were working, and without clear waiting lines
it was wall-to-wall chaos. Worse, each agent was stuck talking to some
high-maintenance traveler (e.g., a family of 8 trying to check-in for a
flight connecting to Uruguay and demanding new seat assignments) and
confused passengers were crawling around the counter like ants around a
pool of syrup. I finally had to elbow my way to the counter and insist
that the agent take me because I had been waiting so long.

I think it's time to start driving to Vegas!

Concur about US Air. I don't mind the walk from the D Terminal,
though, (which I end up taking if I fly Alaska instead of Southwest)
and the facilities there are much nicer than A/B/C. D should also be
getting their own baggage claim in a year or so, though- that's the
current project going on at McCarran in front of the D Terminal.

It seems like the last 5 years or so I have never NOT flown out from the D
gates. The last time I didn't have to make that trek was when we went out of
the country.
