Hello,

Can someone recommend a good, competent, honest moving company to move
a family from Summerlin to Henderson.

I know that honest movers are as hard to find as honest mechanics, so
I need to turn to the community for help.

I would appreciate any recommedations.

Thank You.

Rusty,

Check out this link http://www.angieslist.com. It's free to join for one
year. It's basically a list made up of reviews by real people who have
used a service here in Las Vegas. They did show quite a bit on moving.

If you think there are no honest mechanics then you are taking your car
to the wrong garage. Tom in Ct

Another source for a moving company could be "The most helpful person in
Vegas" David Berman. There must be loads of people moving into and out
of Sun City Anthem. David will know. Tom in Ct

I didn't say that.

I said that they were hard to find.

I stand by the statement 100%.

Be sure to get a "BINDING ESTIMATE", or when they get to the delivery
location, they will hit you up for hundreds more. If you refuse to
pay, they take your goods to the warehouse, and you get hit up for
even more in storage fees. Stick with the name companies (Allied,
Mayflower, North American, etc) and be careful with the "non
affiliateds independents" if you select one of them.

Be sure they are licensed, insured, and bonded, and they have long
term, background checked employees. You don't want some guy from the
day labor pool, or someone they picked up that morning from the street
side checking out your stuff as it's picked up and delivered. Laborers
have been known to come back weeks later to help themselves, and they
know exactly what you have.

Be sure they carry (and that it is current) workmens comp insurance or
when the laborer hurts his back carrying in your TV, you (or your
homeowners insurance) don't get stuck for his medical bills.

If you are paying by weight, follow them to the scales and veryify the
weight. Be sure they don't stop to fill up the gas tank on the way to
the scales to pad the bill also. (50 galls of gas weighs about 400
pounds, and you don't want to pay for that extra weight).

Do your homework and thoroughly research their record. Google the name
of the company, check on Craigslist, etc, etc.

Check the Vegas BBB website for complaints:
http://www.vegasbbb.org/
http://www.vegasbbb.org/go.html?location=/~special/bbblink.php3?library
Click on Home
Click on Planning a Cost-Effective Move

Check the local regulatory agencies also, state, city, county for
complaints, licensing issues etc.

I cant remember the name of the company...but they drop off a big box,
you load it up and they will come and pick up the box and drop it off at
your new house.

I, and some of my coworkers, have used an in-town moving company called
Denali Movers. We all have have been very happy with the service. They
do no boxing. They just load your boxes and furniture and deliver and
unload the stuff into your new location. Last I heard they charge $85 an
hour. So it behooves you to have everything ready for them to load onto
the truck.

PODS is an excellent service. At least you know up front exactly what
your expenses will be. Remember to pad, pad, pad. Buy paper pads or
use copious amounts of newspaper when packing. If you go with a local
mover, GET AN ABSOLUTE GUARANTEED PRICE. Get the price written in
blood, chiselled in stone. Some movers will attempt to rip you off in
ways you can't believe. NUMBER YOUR BOXES. You have to sign-off at the
end of the move that all is there and all is well. Coming back later
for a missing box or tv is useless. "Okay, Mr. Smith, we'll look in the
back of the truck--nope, it's not there". Observe the movers every
second of the move. If the driver says he is going to stop for lunch on
the way to your new home, GO WITH HIM. Heck, even take him to Fatburger
and buy his lunch, then subtract the down time from the total bill. Do
not pay over seventy-five an hour for two good men. Ask the company if
they hire work-release prisoners as labor. Ask the company if they
screen their workers. Demand written proof of insurance. When the
estimator comes to your home, ask for the names of five local customers
the company has moved in the past two months. If they can't come up
with five satisfied customers in the last two months, forget them.
Craigslist often has criers who post just to fake a good reputation.
Have a big garage sale before you move. Remember, the cheapest way to
move something is to sell it and put the cash in your wallet. Don't
forget, GET A SET GUARANTEED PRICE IN WRITING.

Go to Bonanza, between Martin L King Blvd & Rancho Dr. and pick up two
hispanics. They'll be standing on the side of the road waiting for a job.
Believe it or not, this is exactly where all the moving, yard work, and
construction companies pick up their labor force each morning, around
5am'ish.

Same people, less cost. Now go get a U-Haul and just keep an eye on them
while they do all the work for you.

Personally, if I were you though... I'd just go back to New York or
California, or where ever you moved in from. Las Vegas is really bad news.

Here is just the article you may want to see. It's in todays Las Vegas
Sun, and focuses on problems with unlicensed movers:
